Pierre Jean Porro (c. 1759 in Béziers, † May 31 1831 in Montmorency, near Paris) was a French guitarist, composer and music publisher of classical music.
Pierre Jean Porro, who presumably had Italian ancestry, received his musical training in his hometown. Porro 1783 moved to Paris, where he had earned a living as a guitar teacher. He began publishing a weekly "Le Journal de Guitare", during which he published collections of his own works for guitar. Guitar music enjoyed in the salons of the late 18th and early 19thCentury popular. Besides Porro worked in Paris from 1780 to 1820 guitarists such as Filippo Gragnani (1767-1812), Fernando Sor, Mauro Giuliani, Dionisio Aguado and Ferdinando Carulli.
The strong demand in 1786 prompted him to establish a larger publishing house, which also ran an instrument trade. More than by his own numerous compositions he had success with the publication of sacred and secular works of Italian composers such as Francesco Durante, Jommelli, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, but also by composers of his time as Mozart andHaydn, which he brought to the French audience.
